I finally talked to my cousin about those 'smart' plant pots

She said her $50 one killed her fern because it overwatered based on a faulty sensor. That made me realize the whole 'internet of things' for basic home stuff might just be a fad looking for a problem to solve. Has anyone else had a gadget fail at its one job?

My brother bought a smart trash can that was supposed to open when you waved your hand. It worked maybe twice, then just stayed shut. He had to pry it open with a butter knife to throw stuff away. We called it the $120 bread box. It's sitting in his garage now because the battery died and he can't be bothered to fix it.

$120 bread box" is killing me. My aunt got a smart soap dispenser that was supposed to sense your hand. It either shot out way too much or just made a sad whirring noise. We'd all stand there waving our hands like idiots over the sink.

Got a smart light bulb that just cycles colors on its own now, like a sad disco for nobody.
