Noticed all the 'AI business coaches' popping up on LinkedIn this spring
I scrolled past maybe 15 profiles in the last week where people with zero actual business experience are selling courses on how to use ChatGPT to run a company. One guy was a former barista giving advice on supply chain management. How do you tell the real experts from the ones just riding the hype wave?

Easy fix. Look at their work history. If someone spent 2019 making lattes and 2020 "studying dropshipping" on YouTube, they probably aren't the one to trust with your inventory management. The real experts are usually too busy running actual companies to post 4 motivational quotes about AI every morning.

I had a similar situation last year and what worked for me was straight up asking them to walk me through a real problem they'd solved. One guy gave me this long story about "scaling operations" and I cut him off and asked how he'd handle a supplier who was consistently late on shipments. He couldn't give me a straight answer. The person I ended up hiring had been a warehouse manager for 5 years and she just said "I'd set up a tracking sheet and call them every Tuesday morning until they got their act together." Simple and real. Sometimes you just gotta chop through the fancy talk and see who actually knows their stuff.

That warehouse manager's answer is exactly the kind of thing that cuts through the noise. It's a good reminder that the best hires often come from humble roles where they actually got their hands dirty.
