A client in Chicago said my invoices were confusing to their accounting team.
They specifically said the line items were too vague, like just 'design work' for a $1500 charge. I switched to breaking everything down by project phase and deliverable, which took an extra 10 minutes per invoice. Has anyone else had to overhaul their billing format because of client feedback?

Oh man, my first invoices were so bad they were basically just me writing "For Stuff" with a number next to it.

Those early invoices can be a mess. You need to list each task or material separately, like "interior wall prep" or "two gallons of primer." Just writing "for stuff" leaves you open to disputes if a client questions the bill. Clear line items protect you and make you look professional. It's worth taking the extra minute to write it out right.
