Got a real lesson in cash flow at a coffee shop in Austin
I was meeting a client there last year, and my card got declined for a $4 coffee... right in front of them. I had plenty of money in my business account, but it was all tied up in invoices that hadn't been paid yet. That moment was so embarrassing it made me change my whole system. Now I keep a separate checking account with enough to cover two months of my personal bills, and I only transfer money over once client payments actually clear. It stops that panic when payments are late. Has anyone else set up a simple buffer like this, or do you use a different trick?

Wait your card got declined for just four dollars? That's wild when you know the money is out there somewhere. Your new system makes total sense, I should really do something like that before I end up in the same spot. Do you find it hard to leave that buffer money alone and not touch it?

My cousin had a card decline at a gas pump for three bucks last year. Turns out his bank put a weird hold on his account for some online order. It took him two days to sort it out.

Banks really love to make life harder on purpose.
