My fabric dye disaster at the Portland studio

I was trying to dye a silk dress a deep emerald green for a client's order. The dye bath looked perfect, but when I pulled the dress out after 45 minutes, it had these awful, splotchy purple streaks all through it. I think the water in their old building had some mineral issue I didn't account for. I had to stay up all night hand-painting the whole thing with fabric markers to even it out. Has anyone else had a dye job go totally wrong because of the water where you work?

My basement floor drain backed up during a rainstorm in April

I was down there moving some boxes when I saw water bubbling up around the drain cover. I tried a cheap plastic drain snake from the hardware store, but it just got stuck. Ended up calling a plumber who found a broken pipe under the slab, which cost me $1,200 to fix. Anyone know a good way to check for these problems before they flood your house?

Everything was measured and cut by hand, no laser levels or nail guns. Today, new guys often watch a video and start with all the gear right away. That old way built incredible patience and precision, but now projects move faster. Is that deep, slow training better for the craft, or are we smarter to use new tech and learn as we go? I'd like to hear where you stand on this.
