My old van just rolled past 300,000 miles on the odometer this morning

It's the same Ford Transit I've used for every install job for the last 12 years. I never thought a work vehicle could last that long hauling ladders and gear every day. Has anyone else had a van hit a crazy high mileage like that?

Your van is basically a mechanical cockroach at this point, it would probably survive the apocalypse. I'm just waiting for the day you roll into a job and the odometer resets to zero out of pure shame. That thing has more miles than some small airplanes, it's a miracle of duct tape and hope.

My 2004 Econoline just hit 380,000 miles last week. The duct tape on the rear bumper is holding the tail light in, but I swear the engine runs on stubbornness. It makes this new whining noise going uphill that sounds like it's complaining about the drive. Honestly, if it dies, I'll probably just give it a Viking funeral in the Home Depot parking lot.

Try a new belt for that whine.

Notice how the best tools are never the shiny new ones, they're the beat up things that just won't quit... like my grandpa's old claw hammer with the cracked handle. It's got a memory in the wood, knows the job better than I do. These vans are the same, they become part of the work, rattling along with all that history in the frame. There's something honest about a machine that's just used up, no pretense left, just pure function.
